A magic user who gets genie-like powers from an herbal concoction. Yes, he gains power from a djinn tonic.

Not sure what the objective of this combat final is, but it takes place in a maze. Maybe an invisible one, maybe a mirror one.

I honestly don't know which is the worse idea, letting students buy hypergolic chemicals, or them inevitably synthesizing them themselves.

Considering the range of idiocy that can be found in the Labs from the Tech-Track students, i'm surprised that no-one has tried to work on the Nootropic range of pharmaceuticals.
"If being very intelligent is good, then more must be better..."
It's bad enough in our universe with non-mutants working in this field...
( Yes, i remember Solon produced by Dr.Dad, but as far as i know that formula hasn't been released publicly yet. )

A group of teachers sat at a table in a conference room in Schuster hall. There was one empty chair.
Eventually, the Imp came in and sat. She saw that the other teachers were not looking particularly happy.
"What now?" she asked.
"This is your fault," one of the other teachers said.
"Oh?" the Imp asked, puzzled. While many things had been her fault, she could not think of anything that she had done recently that would deserve censure.
"Yes. To be more precise, it's your Art Appreciation class."
The Imp was surprised by this -- Art Appreciation was the most school-like of the classes she taught, and had never caused a problem before.
"Oh?" she asked, even more puzzled.
Yes. Some students - mages and devisors - have asked for a new winter term class."
"Oh?" the Imp asked, still more puzzled.
"Yes. The students want to make three-dimensional representations of some of M C Escher's works, namely Belvedere, Waterfall, and Ascending and Descending."
"Oh."

Nootropics in our universe do range from "That could help Alzheimer's patients!" to "If you understand the risks, how much help do you think this will be?" to "Are you fscking insane?"
For example, with adrafinil, modafinil, and selegiline, one has to wonder how much of the effect comes from self-medication of a common developmental disorder.

A number of nootropics - mostly ones developed by Dr Diabolik - have in fact been mentioned. Most notably are the Solon and THX series of drugs; Solon-3 is banned, but
according to Jadis is 'only addictive in that people really LIKE being smarter'
, while Solon-5 was
successfully used to treat Solange's grandmother for Alzheimer's
. Dr Diabolik himself
dumped a batch of THX-1138 into the water supply of Biloxi, Mississippi
, with the result that grade point averages rose sharply.
The one which shows up most prominently, though, is THX-1157 , a failed experiment which somehow was leaked to the public by someone in his lab, with the street names 'Vulcan' or 'Evil Genius' because of its affect of induced sociopathy. If features prominently in the story "Evil Genius" , naturally enough.

I'd forgotten about THX, and, about Solon 5 being used for Solange's grandmother. TY.
As for the induced sociopathy from THX-1157, one model of intelligence describes the overall trait as having eight aspects, including logical reasoning, memory, perception, and empathy.
Most of the nootropics seem to emphasise memory and logical reasoning, but no mention of empathy or perception, which could be one reason for THX-1157's sociopathic side-effects. ( Whether the 8-aspect model is accurate is a larger question...
)
From working alongside colleagues who have the BPD variant that gives them increased empathy and perception, having too much of any aspect of intelligence in an unbalanced form can be debilitating.
Possibly some seeds for future stories...

I know I've suggested this before (in regards to a fanfic about David Goodkind which I really need to finish), but: a pyroclastic flow manifestor. Hopefully immune to their own power, or their life will be very, very short.
